The Library After Dark

Journey

A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers

by Henry David Thoreau

Thoreau’s first book, the story of a boat journey he made with his brother John in 1839, written at Walden after John had died. Its rivers keep giving way to essays on friendship, poetry and religion. It sold so badly that the unsold copies came back to him, and he wrote that he now had a library of nearly nine hundred volumes, over seven hundred of which he wrote himself.
