Journey

The Alhambra

by Washington Irving

In 1829 Washington Irving was allowed to lodge for some months in the half-ruined Alhambra, the palace of the Nasrid kings of Granada, and he listened to the legends its poor tenants told him. His book of 1832 mixes sketches of the palace with tales of Moorish treasure, an enchanted soldier and three beautiful princesses kept in a tower. It sent travellers to Granada for the rest of the century.
