Journey

Cape Cod

by Henry David Thoreau

Thoreau’s walks along the outer beach of Cape Cod, made on visits between 1849 and 1857 and published in 1865, after his death. It opens with a shipwreck: the brig St John, out of Galway with Irish emigrants, broken on the rocks off Cohasset in October 1849, and the bodies on the shore. Further out, he says, a man may stand on the beach and put all America behind him.
