The Library After Dark

Journey

The Discovery of Guiana

by Walter Raleigh

In 1595 Sir Walter Raleigh sailed up the Orinoco in search of El Dorado and the golden city of Manoa, and returned with stories instead of gold. His book, published the next year, is a courtier’s sales pitch and a fine piece of prose. For two centuries afterwards, maps showed a lake of Manoa where no lake exists.
