Journey

Summer on the Lakes, in 1843

by Margaret Fuller

Margaret Fuller’s journey to Niagara, the Great Lakes, Illinois and Wisconsin in the summer of 1843, her first book of her own. She writes of the prairies, of the settlers, and of the Native peoples being driven west, with more sympathy than most of her readers had. Horace Greeley read it and hired her for the New-York Tribune, as its critic.
