Biography

Journal 01, 1837-1846

by Henry David Thoreau

The first volume of the journal Thoreau began in 1837, the autumn Emerson asked him whether he kept one. It runs past the July day in 1845 when he wrote at the pond, “Yesterday I came here to live”, and on into 1846. He kept it for twenty-four years, some two million words, and drew on it for all his books.
