A Yankee in Canada

by Henry David Thoreau

Thoreau’s account of a week’s excursion to Montreal and Quebec in 1850, gathered in 1866 with his papers against slavery and the state. This was the first book to give his essay on the night he spent in Concord’s jail in 1846, for refusing to pay his poll tax, the title it is known by now, Civil Disobedience. Tolstoy, Gandhi and Martin Luther King all read it.
