Biography

Familiar Letters

by Henry David Thoreau

Thoreau’s letters to his family and friends, from his twenties to his last illness, edited by Franklin Sanborn in 1894. Many are to his sister Sophia, to Emerson’s household, and to H. G. O. Blake, a stranger who wrote to him in 1848 and became his friend for life. In one of the last, in March 1862, he says that he supposes he has not many months to live, “but of course I know nothing about it”.
