Walking

by Henry David Thoreau

Thoreau’s lecture on walking, which he gave many times, printed in The Atlantic Monthly in June 1862, a month after his death. It is the essay in which he wrote that “in Wildness is the preservation of the World”, and meant it. He says he cannot keep his health and spirits without four hours a day, at least, sauntering through the woods and over the hills and fields.
