Natural History

Himalayan Journals, Volume 1

by Joseph Dalton Hooker

Joseph Hooker, botanist and Darwin’s closest friend, spent three years in Sikkim and eastern Nepal from 1848, collecting rhododendrons and being held prisoner, for a while, by the Raja of Sikkim’s minister. The rhododendrons he sent home changed British gardens. With Lyell, he arranged for Darwin’s and Wallace’s papers to be read together in 1858.
