Natural History

Island Life

by Alfred Russel Wallace

Why do islands have the animals they have, and not others? Wallace’s answer drew on geology, ice ages and the chances of drift, and the book is one of the foundations of the study of where living things are found. The line he had drawn between the animals of Bali and those of Lombok, which still bears his name, runs through it.
