My First Summer in the Sierra

by John Muir

In 1869 John Muir went up into the Sierra Nevada with a flock of sheep and a notebook, and came down a different man. My First Summer in the Sierra, made from that notebook, is all wonder: glaciers, water ouzels, the light on granite. He went on to help make Yosemite a national park, and founded the Sierra Club.
