A Tramp Abroad

by Mark Twain

Mark Twain’s account of a walking tour through Germany, Switzerland and Italy, published in 1880, in which he does remarkably little walking. He climbs the Riffelberg above Zermatt with an expedition of guides, porters and mules of absurd size, and ascends Mont Blanc by telescope from Chamonix. Between the jokes are serious pages on glaciers and on the climbers lost on the Matterhorn, taken from Whymper, whose own book is waiting higher up the path.
