The Pickwick Papers

by Charles Dickens

Dickens’s first novel, which came out in monthly parts in 1836 and 1837: Mr Pickwick and three members of his club travel about England and report what they see. It sold slowly until Sam Weller, the cockney who becomes Mr Pickwick’s servant, came into it in the fourth number, and then it sold in tens of thousands. Its first chapter records the Club’s thanks for Mr Pickwick’s paper on the theory of tittlebats.
