The Library After Dark

Biography

Eminent Victorians

by Lytton Strachey

Four short lives, of Cardinal Manning, Florence Nightingale, Thomas Arnold of Rugby and General Gordon, written in 1918 with an irreverence the Victorians would not have allowed. Strachey changed biography by choosing what to leave out. Nightingale comes off best, and not as a lady with a lamp.
