The Library After Dark

Biography

Henry D. Thoreau

by F. B. Sanborn

A life of Thoreau written in 1882 for the American Men of Letters series by Franklin Sanborn, a Concord schoolmaster who knew him in his last years. Sanborn was one of the six men who secretly paid for John Brown’s raid, and it was he who brought Brown to dinner at the Thoreaus’ house in 1857. The book is warm, opinionated and not always accurate, like many first lives.
