The Library After Dark

Biography

Robert Burns

by John Campbell Shairp

John Campbell Shairp, Principal of the United College at St Andrews and Professor of Poetry at Oxford, wrote this life in 1879 for the English Men of Letters series. He had edited Dorothy Wordsworth’s journal of her tour in Scotland, and knew the country Burns wrote about. He is warm about the poems and stern about the life, as Victorian biographers of Burns usually were.
