The Library After Dark

Journey

Alps and Sanctuaries

by Samuel Butler

Samuel Butler, the author of Erewhon, spent many summers walking the valleys on the Italian side of the Alps, in Piedmont and the Canton Ticino, and this is his book of them, published in 1881 with drawings by himself and his friends. He looks at the chapels and shrines, the sacred mountains with their life-size figures, the inns and the people, and argues with nearly everything on the way. He liked Italy better than Victorian England, and it shows on every page.
