Journey

A First Year in Canterbury Settlement

by Samuel Butler

Samuel Butler went out to New Zealand in 1859, took up a sheep run in the high country of Canterbury and wrote home about it, and his father had the letters published in 1863. The mountains and the unexplored passes behind his station turn up again, a few years later, as the way into Erewhon. He came home in 1864 with his money doubled.
