Journey

A Negro Explorer at the North Pole

by Matthew Henson

Matthew Henson went north with Robert Peary on seven expeditions over some twenty years, and was with him when they claimed to have reached the North Pole. His own short account was published in 1912 and was long overlooked. Whether they reached the Pole is still disputed, but Henson’s role deserves to be read in his own words.
