Journey

A Narrative of a Nine Months’ Residence in New Zealand in 1827

by Augustus Earle

Augustus Earle, a travelling artist, spent nine months in the north of New Zealand in 1827 and 1828, drawing and living among Māori, and wrote this lively, opinionated account of it. He later sailed as the artist on the Beagle with Charles Darwin, until ill health put him ashore. His pictures of New Zealand are among the first by a trained painter.
