Journey

A Journey to the Northern Ocean

by Samuel Hearne

In 1771 Samuel Hearne, of the Hudson’s Bay Company, walked from Prince of Wales’s Fort on Hudson Bay to the mouth of the Coppermine River and the Arctic Ocean, the first European to reach it overland in North America. He got there on his third attempt, guided by the great Chipewyan leader Matonabbee, and saw on the way a massacre at the place still called Bloody Falls. His book came out in 1795, three years after his death.
