The Library After Dark

Adventure

Erewhon

by Samuel Butler

A traveler crosses a mountain range and finds a country that punishes illness as a crime and forgives crime as an illness, which is not as funny as Butler makes it sound until you notice how little of it he had to invent. Erewhon is Nowhere spelled backward, more or less, and the joke only works because the country is recognizable. It reads like satire until it reads like a mirror.
