Narrative of a Journey to the Summit of Mont Blanc

by William Howard

William Howard of Baltimore and his companion Jeremiah Van Rensselaer reached the summit of Mont Blanc in July 1819, the first Americans to stand on it. His account of the climb, printed in 1821, is short and plainly told: the guides, the crevasses, the cold, and the night spent on the mountain before the last of the ascent. Mont Blanc had first been climbed only thirty-three years before, in 1786.
