Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea
Read it in the Library After Dark Or read it as plain textIn 1819 the Admiralty sent John Franklin overland from Hudson Bay to map the Arctic coast east of the Coppermine River, and the journey back across the Barren Grounds became a disaster. Eleven of the twenty men died, of hunger, cold and violence, and the rest lived on lichen scraped from the rocks and the leather of their own shoes. Franklin came home famous as the man who ate his boots, and in 1845 sailed for the Northwest Passage and never came back.
