Journey

Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada

by Clarence King

Clarence King was a young geologist with the California Geological Survey when he climbed in the high Sierra, and these sketches of it were published in 1872. In 1864 he and Richard Cotter climbed a peak in the southern Sierra and named it Mount Tyndall, after the physicist and climber whose books stand a little lower on this path. King went on to lead the survey of the fortieth parallel and became the first director of the United States Geological Survey.
