The Foundations of the Origin of Species

by Charles Darwin

Darwin’s theory in his own hand long before the Origin: a pencil sketch of 1842 and a fuller essay of 1844, which he put away with a letter asking his wife to publish it if he died. His son Francis edited them in 1909, for the hundredth anniversary of his birth. Read beside the Origin, they show how much of it he had worked out fifteen years before.
