Coral Reefs

by Charles Darwin

Darwin’s first scientific book, its theory worked out on the Beagle before he had seen a coral atoll: the rings grow up from sinking land, he argued, the reef keeping pace with the sea. It was disputed for more than a century. Drilling on Enewetak in 1952 went down through more than four thousand feet of coral to the volcanic rock beneath, and proved him right.
