The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals

by Charles Darwin

Darwin asked how a sneer, a blush and a shrug came to mean what they do, and looked for the answers in infants, dogs and cats, asylum patients and people the world over. He sent questions to missionaries and settlers abroad, asking whether the people they lived among showed astonishment and shame as the English did. It was one of the first books to be illustrated with photographs.
