The Man Whom the Trees Loved

by Algernon Blackwood

David Bittacy, retired from the forest service in India, settles with his wife on the edge of an English forest, and the trees begin, very slowly, to take him from her. Algernon Blackwood published it in Pan’s Garden in 1912. Nothing in it is violent, and it is one of the most unsettling stories about a wood ever written.
