The Wood Beyond the World

by William Morris

Golden Walter sails from home and finds his way into a wood ruled by a beautiful and terrible Lady, with a Maid who serves her and plans her escape. William Morris printed it at his own Kelmscott Press in 1894, with a frontispiece by Edward Burne-Jones. It is one of the first fantasies set in a world wholly invented, and C. S. Lewis and Tolkien both read Morris closely.
