Fairy Tale

The Water-Babies

by Charles Kingsley

Tom, a little chimney-sweep, runs from a great house where he is taken for a thief, falls into a river and becomes a water-baby, and learns his lessons among the creatures of the stream and the sea. Charles Kingsley, a clergyman and a keen naturalist who had written to Darwin welcoming the Origin, filled it with jokes about the scientists of his day. It is often credited with helping to pass the Chimney Sweepers Act of 1864.
