Grimm’s Fairy Tales
Read it in the Library After Dark Or read it as plain textJacob and Wilhelm Grimm published the first volume of their Children’s and Household Tales in 1812, and much of it came not from peasants by the fire but from young women of educated families in Kassel. They revised it through seven editions until 1857, and with each one the tales grew gentler and more pious, though the wicked were still punished in full. This is the forest’s own copy, a selection made by Frances Jenkins Olcott, who ran the children’s rooms of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.
