The Mountains of California

by John Muir

John Muir’s first book, of 1894, on the Sierra Nevada he had walked for more than twenty years: its glaciers, passes, forests, wild gardens and water-ouzels. In one chapter he climbs a tall Douglas spruce in a gale to hear the forest from the top, and clings there for hours, swinging. Muir had helped to found the Sierra Club two years before, and was its first president.
