Natural History

A Narrative of Travels on the Amazon and Rio Negro

by Alfred Russel Wallace

Wallace went to the Amazon in 1848 with Henry Walter Bates and spent four years there collecting. On the voyage home the ship caught fire and sank with almost all his specimens and notes, and he spent ten days in an open boat. He wrote this book from what he had saved and remembered.
