Natural History

A Year at the Shore

by Philip Henry Gosse

Philip Henry Gosse’s book The Aquarium, of 1854, set off the Victorian craze for keeping a piece of the sea in a glass tank in the parlour. This book of 1865 follows the creatures of the English shore month by month, with his own coloured plates. His son Edmund wrote of their life together, and of his father’s faith, in Father and Son.
