Is Mars Habitable?

by Alfred Russel Wallace

In 1907 Alfred Russel Wallace, who had worked out natural selection alongside Darwin, read Percival Lowell’s Mars and Its Canals and answered it with this short book. He calculated that Mars was far too cold and its air far too thin for water to flow, let alone for engineers to dig canals across it. Shelve it beside Lowell and let them argue.
