Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation

by Robert Chambers

Published anonymously in 1844, Vestiges told the whole history of the universe as one long development, from nebula to mankind, and sold in enormous numbers. Scientists hated it for its errors, and its author, the Edinburgh publisher Robert Chambers, was not publicly named until after his death. Darwin, his own theory written out and put away that same year, watched how it was received.
