Essays — First Series

by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Emerson’s essays of 1841, among them History, Self-Reliance, Compensation and The Over-Soul. Self-Reliance is where a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, a line usually quoted without the word foolish. Thoreau lived in Emerson’s house from 1841 to 1843, as handyman, gardener and friend.
