Medicine

On Chloroform and Other Anæsthetics

by John Snow

John Snow was finishing this book when he died in 1858, and his friend Benjamin Ward Richardson saw it through the press with a memoir of him. Snow was among the first doctors to give anaesthetics as his particular work, and he measured his doses with a care nobody had shown before. He gave chloroform to Queen Victoria at the births of two of her children.
