Medicine

On the Mode of Communication of Cholera

by John Snow

John Snow, a London doctor, argued that cholera was carried in water and not in bad air, as nearly everyone then believed. The second edition, of 1855, added the outbreak around the pump in Broad Street, Soho, and the map of its deaths that lies on the table in the Map Room next door. He was also the doctor who gave Queen Victoria chloroform when Prince Leopold was born.
