The Library After Dark

Medicine

Religio Medici

by Thomas Browne

Sir Thomas Browne, a physician in Norwich, wrote The Religion of a Doctor for himself in his early thirties, and it was printed without his leave in 1642. Hydriotaphia, bound here with it, begins with some burial urns dug up in a Norfolk field and becomes a meditation on death and on being remembered. Few doctors have written English prose as fine.
