Medical Women

by Sophia Jex-Blake

Sophia Jex-Blake and six other women matriculated at Edinburgh University in 1869 to study medicine, and in 1870 a crowd of students pelted them with mud outside Surgeons’ Hall to keep them from an anatomy examination. The university later refused to let them graduate. These two essays, of 1872, make the case for women doctors with history and plain argument.
