Medicine

Of Medicine

by Celsus

Aulus Cornelius Celsus wrote an encyclopedia in Rome in the time of the emperor Tiberius, and only its eight books on medicine survive. They were among the first medical books to be printed, at Florence in 1478, and they give the four signs of inflammation that students still learn: redness and swelling, with heat and pain. This is James Greive’s English translation of the eighteenth century.
