Alaeddin and the Enchanted Lamp

by John Payne

In 1888 Hermann Zotenberg published an Arabic text of Aladdin from a manuscript in the Bibliothèque nationale, and John Payne translated it the next year as Alaeddin and the Enchanted Lamp. The manuscript had been copied in Paris by a Syrian priest, Dionysios Chavis, and scholars now think it was made after Galland’s French rather than before it. The lamp is genuine; it is the pedigree that is the mystery.
