The Library After Dark

Legend

The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night

by John Payne

John Payne’s translation, the first complete one into English from the Arabic, came out in nine volumes from 1882 to 1884, five hundred copies for subscribers only. Burton, who had planned his own, followed it closely, and readers have argued ever since over how much he owed it. Payne’s English is plainer than Burton’s, and many think it the better of the two.
