Antar: A Bedoueen Romance

by Terrick Hamilton

Antara ibn Shaddad was a real poet of sixth-century Arabia, the son of an Arab chief and an Ethiopian slave woman, who won his freedom by his courage, and one of his odes is among the Mu’allaqat, the poems said to have hung at the Kaaba. Storytellers in the coffee houses made him the hero of a vast romance, told over many nights. Terrick Hamilton, a secretary at the British embassy in Constantinople, translated its first part in 1819.
