Beside the Fire

by Douglas Hyde

Douglas Hyde’s collection of Irish folk stories, published in 1890, taken down from storytellers in Connacht, with the Irish texts and his translations. Hyde helped found the Gaelic League in 1893 to keep the language alive, and in 1938 he became the first President of Ireland. His preface is a plea to collect the stories before they were gone.
