Journey

Hours of Exercise in the Alps

by John Tyndall

Tyndall’s later climbing book, of 1871, with his first ascent of the Weisshorn, which he made with the guides Johann Joseph Bennen and Ulrich Wenger in 1861. It also has the scientist’s habit of carrying instruments to the top, and of explaining the colour of the sky on the way down. He came close to climbing the Matterhorn in 1862, and the point on its south-west ridge where he turned back is still called Pic Tyndall.
