Journey

Climbing in the British Isles

by W. P. Haskett Smith

The first guide to rock climbing in Britain, published in 1894, with the crags of England set out in order like a gazetteer. Walter Parry Haskett Smith climbed Napes Needle on Great Gable alone in 1886, and that climb is often called the beginning of rock climbing as a sport in Britain. This first volume covers England; a second, on Wales and Ireland, followed.
